In my 25 years of life span I have never struggled for food. I never felt what hunger is. My parents and grand parents took care of me in my early days and I have my own earnings today. Everything comes in time on the table. Breakfast at 9, lunch at 1 and diner at 8. Have read about famine and drought in history and geography which are my favorite subjects in school. Never felt its impact so much unless I saw a man searching something in sewerage and it was a packet of rice which was almost soaked with sewage water. I thought he will wash it somewhere and will have it, but to my surprise he started eating it without cleaning . I read about famine crisis in Somalia and farmers committing suicide in India in news papers. India was affected by strong famine for almost 14 times and the most worst happening was in the year 1943 when almost 3 million people died. To my knowledge this wave was prevalent in Gujarath even in the year 1983. Now we could sort out the reasons for all these famine crisis or the food crisis of many millions in our country and statistics also will help us and I have no doubt we could write for almost 100 pages or even more about it. But what is the next step and what I(we) can do stands foremost rather than digging out the details behind it. Whenever I go for shopping in T.Nagar or anywhere near my locality I never give a penny to the beggars and I used to ask them whether they would like to have something for which many refuse. One incident I remember when I went to shopping with Ramya in Pondy Bazaar where one old woman came near us when we were having ice cream and asked for alms for which we refused and the next moment she asked us to buy and give her an ice cream for which we obliged. That was pretty surprising for us and we were glad to see her licking ice cream like a child. Afer all we earn for our stomach!!!Thursday, May 03, 2007
